Astronomy Hotspot

One of the most inspirational times of day is sunset in the Hebrides. The sun meets the sea and sinks slowly below the horizon leaving behind a dancing colour play of pinks, reds and oranges, fading through to purples and blues. With Tigh na Boireach sitting on the west coast of the island, a short walk down through the dunes provides the perfect place to take in the ever changing light that the evening produces.

As the evening blends into night, the sky becomes alive with stars and with very few streetlights on the whole of the island chain, the sky is virtually free from light pollution. On a cloudless night the clear skies and wide horizon provide the perfect conditions for stargazing. Whether you are a novice or a keen astronomer, there is no better place to discover the beauty of the night sky. Tigh na Boireach has a pair of binoculars and a comprehensive guide to stargazing for you to use but you may wish to bring more specialist equipment.

If you are very lucky, you may even see the Northern Lights – a spectacular natural phenomenon caused by electrically charged solar particles entering the earth’s atmosphere. The rays of coloured light appear to dance and swirl around the sky in a spectacular display and there are few more magical sights. The clear skies coupled with the northern location of Tigh na Boireach make it an ideal place to keep an eye out!
